they really said "hm lets make a low poly game with a banger physics engine thats revolutionary for our time and a main character whos a nonverbal awkward nerd but is also a total badass and is named gordon freeman. and also some of the coolest and most creative monster and alien environment designs, and a pretty awesome plot. then lets make a sequel where we introduce an overarching plot with religious themes and the main character being a fated savior of the entire human race 20 years in the post apocaluptic future.
oh also theres this guy whos literally willing to give up everything in his undercover job with the enemy alien government and also he owes the MC a beer, and has sectoral heterochromia and an emotional bond with the main character.
